Devotion - Acts 4:36-37 NKJV
And Joseph, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Here is an act of faith at a level that changes the way lives are lived. No one was preaching give everything financially over so that the church could use it to kick off the greatest outreach ministry of all time. No…God spoke to Joseph...I don’t know whether it was an audible voice or just a tug at his heart…but God spoke to the man and emotionally moved him to sow a seed that would challenge other believers all over the city. His giant sacrifice paved the way for others to be fed, clothed, given something to drink, and visited in prison. His offering…his sacrifice caused a landslide of giving in the new church and met needs on an astronomical level.
Do you know something? That is all it takes. One man or woman full of God and grace…One man or woman willing to be used…One man or woman willing to make a sacrifice…
For Joseph it cost him some property to “witness” the gospel of Christ. Joseph, in this setting, becomes the first Christian man, not apostle mind you, that establishes a level of financial sacrifice and love that is unprecedented. His selfless act of faith caused a chain reaction that help in the explosion of the New Testament church that we are enjoying today.
