As I sit here with my coffee this morning staring out over the Colorado River, on a hill lurching a good distance away and above, but within good distance of my church…I’m dreaming. I’m dreaming of things to come. I’m dreaming of things that will be. I am standing in awe this morning at the things that are unseen making all of these great things happening.

A couple of scriptures from my devotions today…

Romans 1:20

"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."

Romans 11:18

"...do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this; You do not support the root, but the root supports you."

The scripture says God’s invisible qualities have been clearly seen. The invisible has become visible. The next scripture reminds us that we do not support the root…it supports us. These two scriptures hit me hard this week and run side by side in helping me see the invisible mysteries of God.

As the branch grows it becomes big and strong, as well as supports other branches in due time. Take the time to look at a tree in its entire splendor. It is awe inspiring. From the ground comes this huge mass of trunk that springs up vertically towards the sky. As it grows it becomes larger in diameter. It then, at some point, starts to split into different small branches. Yet these branches are still rather large in diameter. From these main branches stem’s a series of smaller branches. These smaller branches over time will both grow and enlarge themselves to grow another series of branches or they won’t. Nevertheless, when you stand back and look at the tree, all you see is a nice big full tree.

And here is the thing…

What you are not seeing…the root. The root lays invisible under the terra firma below. It quietly digs and absorbs all the nutrients that the earth can provide. The root, below, is constantly working on behalf of the tree, above. They are united in purpose. They are united in vision. They are the same. Yet they look and feel entirely different from each other.

And here is the truth to this invisible natural phenomenon…

No matter how big the trunk, branches, and stems get on the tree…it is because of the root. They, in themselves, produce no growth and no sustenance. The root, however, is the life source. As beautiful as the tree might ever get…it is only because of the hard work and diligence of the root.

So maybe next time we look at something we’ve accomplished, a victory won, a prayer answered, or a loved one healed….maybe it’s time to start giving credit where credit is due. Maybe it’s time we open and close our prayers in praise.

It’s time we start to open our eyes and see the invisible. You do not support the root…it supports you.
